Right Arm Removed-Internet Banned on Mobile Devices

Mobile Phone Addcition

Weird as it may seem to hear that a techno geek who runs his own IT business and uses social media for interaction for marketing and research has turned OFF ALL INTERNET traffic from his mobile devices. How did I manage?

Do what you can, with what you have, where you are

As Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are” and how to continue a ‘normal’ day without the connection to the online world was a task I felt was going to be difficult. But I must admit, getting over the first few days it seems to be less daunting. Ok, how am I going to break this habit of reaching for my mobile phone to check emails, social media, texts, missed calls, surfing the net, Google Maps, and much more.

“It takes 21 days to break a habit”

Rhonda Byrne of “The Secret” fame had a section on habits and it was said that “It takes 21 days to break a habit”. Ok, in my mind that meant 19 days and counting. Is it an addiction? Maybe it is, we have heard of “Nomophobia” which is an addiction to mobile phones, meaning that we are in fear without our mobile contact. How can we survive without it? A study in the UK revealed that 66% of people have this genuine fear of not having their mobile phone on them at all times. In fact the fear is so strong that, if it was chosen which 2 items would you panic most over if you left home in the morning without bringing, the phone was the priority. The phone was higher in the ranking than their wallets and purses. They reckon they could survive better without their wallets than their mobiles.

“When setting goals, tell everyone-Make yourself accountable”

4 years ago, sitting during a high intensifying intriguing and motivation workshop on setting goals with Pat Slattery, he discussed that when setting goals, it is ok to write them down. But to add extra pressure to fulfill the goal, it’s an idea to tell others so that this will add the “accountability” factor. What do I mean about accountability? “It’s a word not to be loosely thrown about”- Joe Coyle of www.JCFC.ie once told me. Basically, when a teacher gave me homework to do, I would need to do my best to complete it for the next day as I know I will be asked have I it finished. This pushes out of our comfort zone that little bit extra.

I Challenge you to try no internet connected traffic on your phone for 24hours? I will follow up with my challenges on my new Goal!!!!
